Mayoral Candidate Mamdani Hesitant on NYPD Commissioner’s Future Despite Crime Record Praise
In an appearance at the National Night Out event, mayoral frontrunner Zohran Mamdani refrained from confirming whether he would retain NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch in his potential administration, despite commending her performance in reducing crime.
The Democratic socialist expressed admiration for Tisch’s efforts in combating corruption within the NYPD and noted the agency’s success in lowering crime rates across the city. However, he stated, “It’s too early for me to make those commitments as I campaign for the general election,” while addressing reporters alongside Attorney General Letitia James.
These remarks arrive in the wake of new NYPD data indicating a significant decline in shootings this year, attributed to Tisch’s leadership. The statistics show 412 shooting incidents, resulting in 489 victims, throughout the first seven months of 2025.
These figures set new records, surpassing the previous lows of 426 shootings and 522 victims, recorded in 2017 and 2018, respectively.
Mamdani also responded to critiques from Mayor Eric Adams, who suggested that he has only attended police funerals during his campaign while neglecting to honor fallen officers during his years as a state legislator.
Having served over four years in the state Assembly, Mamdani won the Democratic primary against former Governor Andrew Cuomo in June. He stated, “My focus has been on the tragedies and triumphs of my district in Astoria and Long Island City,” without addressing the attendance issue directly.
Last week, the Ugandan-born candidate paid his respects to the family of NYPD officer Didarul Islam, who was killed in a mass shooting at a Park Avenue office building.
However, records indicate that Mamdani did not publicly comment on the deaths of several officers killed in the line of duty during his time in Albany.
As he campaigns for a citywide position, Mamdani expressed his commitment to representing all boroughs in the city and emphasized the impact of the recent mass shooting that claimed the lives of four New Yorkers, including Detective Islam.
“I hope that there will be no further shootings of police officers or murders throughout this campaign or during my pursuit to become mayor,” he concluded.
