Trump Urges Washington Commanders’ Owner to Reclaim the Redskins Legacy

Trump calls on NFL's Washington Commanders owner to bring back Redskins name

Trump Urges NFL Teams to Revert Names to Redskins and Indians

On Sunday, former President Trump publicly called for the Washington Commanders to revert to their previous name, the Redskins, dismissively labeling them as the “Washington Whatever’s.” He also advocated for the Cleveland Guardians to return to their former identity as the Indians.

The Commanders officially adopted their new name in 2022, following a rebranding process initiated years prior due to concerns that their moniker was disrespectful to Native Americans. Trump contended that the societal atmosphere has shifted back towards valuing free speech over political correctness.

“Immediately revert to the Washington Redskins Football Team. There is significant support for this change,” he stated emphatically on his Truth Social platform.

He continued, emphasizing the historic significance of the Cleveland Indians, one of Major League Baseball’s founding teams, stating, “Many within our Indigenous community desire this change. Their heritage and dignity are being undermined. The climate today is different from just a few years ago.”

“We are a nation driven by passion and common sense. OWNERS, MAKE IT HAPPEN!!!”

The Cleveland Guardians transitioned from the Indians name in 2020, having previously abandoned the controversial “Chief Wahoo” logo. Similarly, the Commanders, after facing mounting pressure, retired the Redskins name in 2020, initially competing as the Washington Football Team before settling on the Commanders designation in 2022.
