Trump Endorses Cuomo’s Independent Bid for NYC Mayor Despite Primary Loss
On Tuesday, former President Donald Trump expressed his belief that ex-Governor Andrew Cuomo should continue his campaign for mayor of New York City, even after his defeat in the Democratic primary to Zohran Mamdani, whom Trump labeled a "communist."
"I think he should stay in the race," Trump stated on the White House lawn when questioned about Cuomo’s re-emergence as an independent candidate. "He has a chance."
Notably, Trump did not reference incumbent Mayor Eric Adams, who is also pursuing an independent campaign as he seeks re-election.
This endorsement comes amidst tensions with Adams, who has criticized Cuomo’s decision to remain in the race, asserting that he should be the Democratic contender against Mamdani come November.
Trump, however, emphasized his support for Cuomo, insisting, "I think Andrew [Cuomo] would have a solid opportunity."
"He needs to run an effective campaign," Trump remarked, further emphasizing the challenge ahead by stating, "He’s facing off against a communist."
The former president expressed that the mayoral contest is far from settled, citing emerging information about Mamdani.
When pressed about who he would prefer to support, Trump notably refrained from mentioning Adams, simply saying, "I don’t want to say."
In related news, Jeanine Pirro, who served as Trump’s interim U.S. Attorney in Washington, D.C., and has a history of contention with Cuomo, is reportedly examining allegations against the former governor for purportedly lying to Congress.
