Trump Promises Major Increase in Tariffs on Indian Imports
WASHINGTON — On Monday, President Trump pledged to significantly raise tariffs on imports from India, citing the country’s ongoing acquisition of Russian oil amid Moscow’s protracted invasion of Ukraine.
“India is significantly increasing its purchases of Russian oil, and much of it is being resold on the open market for considerable profit,” Trump stated in a post on Truth Social.
“They show little regard for the lives being lost in Ukraine due to Russian aggression. Consequently, I will be implementing a substantial increase in the tariffs that India must pay to the United States,” he added.
Recently, Trump declared that a 25% duty on Indian imports would take effect at 12:01 a.m. Thursday.
This new tariff is set to commence just a day before Trump’s August 8 ultimatum for Russia to seek a peaceful resolution with Ukraine or face further sanctions and tariffs aimed at nations continuing to buy oil from Moscow.
India and China are perceived as the primary buyers of Russian oil, which has enabled the Kremlin to endure severe sanctions and maintain funding for its military operations.
Additionally, Trump’s special envoy, Steve Witkoff, is scheduled to travel to Russia on Wednesday in an attempt to urge the Kremlin to enter negotiations.
