Tragic Tour Bus Accident in New York Claims Lives and Causes Injuries
A tour bus on its way to New York City from Niagara Falls was involved in a serious accident on Friday, resulting in multiple fatalities and injuries, according to law enforcement officials.
The cause of the crash, which occurred on I-90 near Pembroke, roughly 25 miles (40 kilometers) east of Buffalo, remains under investigation.
Witnesses at the scene captured images showing the bus overturned on its side, just off the highway.
Trooper James O’Callahan, a spokesperson for the New York State Police, stated, “Currently, we are contending with multiple fatalities, numerous entrapments, and several injuries.”
Emergency services utilized multiple ambulances and medical helicopters to transport victims away from the site of the accident.
Powell Stephens from Medina shared his observations with The Buffalo News, stating, “There was shattered glass all over the roadway and personal belongings scattered everywhere.”
New York Governor Kathy Hochul expressed her condolences on social media, indicating that she was informed about the “tragic tour bus accident” and highlighting that her office is coordinating with law enforcement and local authorities for further assistance.
The air medical transport service, Mercy Flight, announced that three of its helicopters were activated to assist in moving patients from the accident scene to nearby hospitals.
While specific details regarding the number of injuries have not been disclosed, the Erie County Medical Center in Buffalo reported receiving at least eight individuals by 2:10 p.m.
Mercy Flight president Margaret Ferrentino noted that additional helicopters from other services, as well as ambulances from various local agencies, were being dispatched to the location.
“It’s a very active scene,” Ferrentino remarked, adding that prayers are being offered for the victims.
The New York State Thruway Authority reported that a significant section of the highway has been closed in both directions, advising motorists to steer clear of the area.
