Tragic MRI Incident Claims Life of Long Island Man
A Long Island man tragically lost his life in an unusual MRI accident while wearing a heavy 20-pound chain. His family alleges that a technician inadvertently led him into the MRI room, resulting in his attachment to the machine for roughly an hour before he could be freed.
Keith McAllister, 61, sustained fatal injuries in the incident that transpired on Wednesday afternoon at Nassau Open MRI in Westbury, where his wife, Adrienne Jones-McAllister, was scheduled for a knee scan.
"While my mother was on the examination table, the technician stepped out to fetch her husband, but forgot to warn him about removing the chain around his neck, which was then drawn into the machine’s magnetic field," wrote their daughter, Samantha Bodden, on a GoFundMe page established for burial expenses.
Frantically, Jones-McAllister and the technician attempted to release McAllister for several minutes before calling for help, Bodden recounted.
"He remained attached to the MRI for nearly an hour before the chain could be detached from the machine," she added.
Bodden also clarified that the technician was aware of McAllister’s chain when he was brought into the room. "Some reports claim he wasn’t permitted in the room, but that’s incorrect; the technician brought him inside," her statement asserted.
MRI machines emit a strong magnetic field capable of forcefully attracting metal objects and can heat them to dangerous temperatures, posing risks of burns to patients. According to Jones-McAllister, her husband experienced multiple heart attacks during the ordeal, culminating in his death.
