An 11-year-old boy from Texas was fatally shot on Saturday night during a game of "ding, dong, ditch," as reported by law enforcement officials.
The boy was part of a group of children playing the prank around 11 p.m. when he was shot on Racine Street in Houston after knocking on a door and running away, according to the Houston Police Department.
The child suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was quickly transported to a local hospital in critical condition, as stated by Lt. Amber Khan of the Houston Police Department.
Unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries the following day, police confirmed.
Following the shooting, one individual was taken into custody for questioning but has since been released.
As part of the ongoing investigation, law enforcement has executed a search warrant, according to reports.
Experts reveal that the prank of ringing doorbells and fleeing has gained traction on social media platforms like TikTok and has been associated with various unfortunate events nationwide in recent years.
In a related case in Virginia, a homeowner allegedly shot a high school student who was playing the same prank with friends in May.
Earlier in July 2024, another teenager was shot and injured while engaging in the prank on a homeowner in Maine.
