Ready for an All-Nighter
Texas Democratic State Senator Carol Alvarado revealed her plans on Friday to stage a filibuster against a Republican-led redistricting bill. To accommodate her lengthy address, she has equipped herself with a catheter and a urine bag, as reported by multiple sources.
At 57, the Houston-area legislator prepared for this potential endurance test by purchasing a long blue floral dress intended to conceal the bag.
The Texas Senate Democratic Caucus shared footage of Alvarado, donned in her chosen attire, making her way into the chamber as she aims to delay the proposed legislation.
“It’s going to be a long night,” Alvarado tweeted after informing GOP Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, the Senate leader, about her intention to filibuster House Bill 4.
In preparation, she enjoyed barbecue the previous night, underwent IV hydration, and participated in a hot yoga session. “I’ve been prepping for a few days,” she stated.
Filibustering is not new to her; in 2021, Alvarado held the floor for over 15 hours—a state record—protesting against an election reform bill that restricted voting options.
The Republican initiative to alter Texas’s congressional map has already passed the House of Representatives and is anticipated to go through the GOP-dominated Senate. This redistricting bill could potentially secure five extra congressional seats for Republicans and has faced vigorous opposition from Democrats.
In a previous attempt to stall this legislation, more than 50 Texas House Democrats left the state capitol for two weeks.
