Texas Floods: Heroic Rescues Amid Tragedy as Search for the Missing Continues
As recovery efforts intensify following devastating floods in Texas’s Hill Country on Friday, communities are grappling with not only losses but also remarkable tales of bravery from locals.
Julian Ryan, alongside his fiancée Christina Wilson, was home in Ingram when floodwaters began surging through their doors. In response to the rapidly rising levels, Ryan, 27, broke a window to help Wilson, their children, and his mother escape, as reported by a Houston news source.
Wilson later shared that Ryan sustained severe injuries from the glass, damaging one of his arteries. Attempts to contact emergency services went unanswered. She recounted his heartbreaking parting words: “I’m sorry, I’m not going to make it. I love y’all.”
Ryan has been hailed as a “true hero” dedicated to his family, as noted in a GoFundMe page set up for them.
In another instance, Erin Burgess recounted how her life was saved by her 19-year-old son during the flooding. Within minutes, water filled their home, forcing them to seek refuge in a tree for an hour until it was safe enough to move. “That’s the only thing that saved me, was hanging on to him,” said Burgess.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott declared Sunday a “day of prayer” for the affected families, emphasizing the community’s resilience and kinship during times of hardship. “Even as floodwaters raged, neighbors rushed in to rescue, comfort, and bring hope,” he stated, urging all Texans to unite in prayer for those affected.
As of Saturday night, several individuals remained missing. Notably, Greta Toranzo, last seen at Camp Mystic, has her mother, Ellen Toranzo, anxious for news. Carrie Hanna reported that her daughter, Hadley, was also missing from the same camp.
The search efforts continue for grandparents Mike and Charlene Harber, who went missing while their granddaughters were found deceased. Additionally, the Brake couple from Abilene is unaccounted for after their stay at the HTR Campground.
The tragic impact of the Texas floods underscores not only the urgency of search and rescue operations but also the solidarity and courageous actions of community members during this challenging time.
