Texas Authorities Urge Public to Stay Away During Flood Recovery Efforts
In the aftermath of severe flash floods that struck Texas, local law enforcement has expressed concern that onlookers are hampering rescue and recovery operations. Kerr County Sheriff Larry Leitha addressed the issue at a press briefing on Wednesday, appealing to those not engaged in recovery efforts to “allow us space to work.”
“Our emergency responders are working diligently to reach affected areas,” Leitha stated. “However, the influx of visitors, along with local residents wanting to observe the damage, complicates our efforts.”
He reiterated the call for individuals to respect the zones designated for recovery activities.
Sheriff Leitha highlighted that authorities are deploying heavy machinery to sift through substantial amounts of debris accumulated at choke points along the flooded waterways.
Furthermore, he advised residents with large debris on their properties to refrain from using heavy equipment for cleanup until first responders have assessed the area.
“There may be victims buried in that debris,” he emphasized. “It is crucial that we inspect the sites first. Please reach out to us if you have piles of debris that need checking before you initiate any cleanup.”
Current reports from officials indicate a tragic toll in Kerr County, with 95 confirmed fatalities, comprising 59 adults and 36 children. Among these, 14 adults and 13 children remain unidentified.
Authorities have also announced that 161 individuals are still reported missing within the county. Residents who may have reconnected with these missing persons are urged to inform the authorities.
From their assessments, officials have determined that certain search methods, like horseback or ATV patrols, are currently impractical due to dangerous conditions. Many low-water crossings and bridges are awaiting repairs before emergency teams can fully reach every affected area.
