Teen Arrested in Connection with Fatal Shooting of Innocent Grandmother
A teenage suspect was apprehended on Thursday, just days following a tragic shooting incident that claimed the life of a 69-year-old grandmother, as reported by law enforcement officials.
The 18-year-old was taken into custody by federal authorities and the NYPD concerning the shooting that occurred around 12:25 p.m. on August 27, which resulted in the death of Robin Wright, who was hit in the face by a stray bullet at the intersection of East 110th Street and Madison Avenue.
Authorities described the arrest as the result of a collaborative effort involving Homeland Security Investigations, the NYPD’s Violent Gang Task Force, and the U.S. Marshals Regional Fugitive Task Force, focusing on the unwarranted violence linked to a failed cannabis robbery.
"I stood there and watched my friend as she passed away," witnessed Juanita Arnold, who was present with Wright at the time of the incident. "She just wanted to go out for lunch; this shouldn’t have happened."
Community members noted that Wright frequently took walks as part of her recovery following a recent leg surgery.
"She was hoping to find her grandson to go for lunch," Arnold added. "She wanted some activity. She was in rehabilitation to regain her strength, and I volunteered to walk with her. I made it back, but she didn’t."
Wright’s neighbor, Sonya Hampton, recounted how she was with Wright during her final moments. "I had just returned from the store when I heard gunfire. I turned around to see where the shots had landed, and she was on the ground."
The gunfire initiated shortly after the teenage shooter and an accomplice attempted a robbery a block away from where Wright was shot. The two attackers fled, but the intended victim pursued them and fired shots in self-defense.
When the duo returned fire, they accidentally hit Wright, law enforcement sources stated.
Paramedics transported the critically injured Wright to Mount Sinai Morningside, but unfortunately, she could not be saved.
The arrest of the teen suspect came shortly after authorities charged five other young individuals—most of whom were teenagers—with murder connected to a recent drive-by shooting on Labor Day that resulted in the death of one man and injuries to four others near a known marijuana selling location in the Bronx.
Mayor Eric Adams highlighted the growing trend of younger individuals involved in shootings, stating, “We’re witnessing a concerning trend of younger shooters. This reflects the outcomes of certain legislation enacted in Albany and the City Council.”
