Search Underway for Missing Tourist in Juneau, Alaska
Authorities in Alaska are currently conducting a search for a tourist who has gone missing after not returning to her cruise ship following a morning hike earlier this week.
Officials reported on Tuesday afternoon that a 62-year-old woman from Kentucky failed to board the Norwegian Bliss before its scheduled departure, according to the Juneau Police Department.
The woman’s family informed law enforcement that she had set out for a hike that morning. She intended to take a well-known tourist tram partway up a mountain that overlooks downtown Juneau and then hike to Gastineau Peak and Gold Ridge, as detailed by the state’s Department of Public Safety.
Following her disappearance, both ground and aerial search operations launched immediately on Tuesday, with ground teams continuing their efforts on Wednesday. Adverse weather conditions and low visibility halted aerial searches the next day.
The local mountains can still have snowy spots in July, adding an element of risk to hikers in the area. The tram service in this popular cruise destination is favored by tourists due to its proximity to downtown.
The Juneau Police Department and representatives from Norwegian Cruise Lines have yet to respond to requests for comments regarding the situation.
Authorities have not disclosed the identity of the missing woman as the search efforts continue.
