Shark Sightings Prompt Beach Closure in NYC on Independence Day
On the Fourth of July, multiple sharks were observed in the waters surrounding New York City, leading to the temporary closure of a section of beach in Queens.
Footage circulating on social media captured the sharks swimming near Far Rockaway beachgoers. The sightings occurred around 11:30 a.m. close to Beach 32nd Street, with additional reports emerging from Beach 144th and Beach 30th Streets, as noted by Kaz Daughtry, the city’s deputy mayor of public safety, on X.
Daughtry remarked, “These sightings occurred in close proximity to those enjoying the beach. Fortunately, with the aid of drone technology, lifeguards, and the emergency management team, we are ensuring safety while everyone celebrates the holiday.” He added that Beach 30 reopened after an hour of closure, while ongoing monitoring efforts would continue.
Christina Farrell, first deputy commissioner for NYC Emergency Management, stated that their drone unit is actively tracking shark activity to enhance public safety.
Earlier in the week, New York Governor Kathy Hochul assured residents that precautions were being implemented to monitor sharks along the state’s coastlines, particularly in Long Island, in advance of the holiday weekend.
“Our Long Island State Park beaches are beloved by both New Yorkers and visitors, serving as ideal locations to disconnect and enjoy nature,” Gov. Hochul expressed in a statement on Wednesday.
She emphasized, “We are committed to improving our shark detection systems and safety procedures at these beaches to protect these cherished summer traditions. I encourage beachgoers to remain vigilant and follow the guidance provided by lifeguards and park personnel.”
New York State Parks Commissioner Pro Tem Randy Simons affirmed that his agency is equipped to ensure the safety of beachgoers this summer.
“Our staff is ready to protect beachgoers this season, and we are enthusiastic about incorporating advanced technology to enhance our effectiveness,” he stated. “I advise all beach visitors to adhere to the advice and instructions of park staff and remain informed about shark safety while enjoying their summer activities.”
