Cyclist Remembered: Advocate for Safe Streets Killed in Tragic Incident
The cyclist who tragically lost his life, alongside another victim, due to a driver’s reckless actions, was mourned by his family as a dedicated advocate for safer roadways.
Kevin Scott Cruickshank, 55, was preparing for the NYC Century Bike Tour, which is set to return this September after a six-year absence. He was struck by a stolen Chevy Malibu that careened through a traffic median at the intersection of Bowery and Canal streets in Manhattan on Saturday morning.
In a heartbreaking ironic twist, Cruickshank, who worked as a loan manager for Chase Bank, had actively supported initiatives aimed at enhancing road safety.
“Kevin had been a staunch advocate of Transportation Alternatives for years,” his family stated.
“He was registered for the TA Century ride in September—his favorite event—and that’s why he embarked on a long, four-hour ride to Coney Island yesterday morning.”
This bike tour, originally launched in 1990, is scheduled for September 21.
Autumn Donna Ascencio Romero, 23, is believed to have been driving the vehicle that fatally hit Cruickshank and 63-year-old May Kwok, who was seated on a bench during the incident.
Romero and her passenger, 22-year-old Kennedy LaCraft, attempted to escape on foot but were apprehended shortly thereafter. Authorities discovered illicit substances in the vehicle.
Another organization focused on supporting families affected by traffic fatalities expressed its outrage over the loss of two more innocent lives.
“The families within our group are all too familiar with the enduring sorrow that follows such tragedies,” remarked Dahlia Goldenberg, associate director of Families for Safe Streets.
“Canal Street is one of the most perilous areas in Manhattan, notorious for both pedestrian and cyclist fatalities; a total redesign is essential to enhance safety.”
