Home Run Bat Celebrated with Auction, Fetches Nearly $10,000
PHILADELPHIA — A bat thrown into the air by a Little Leaguer from New Jersey in celebration of his home run, which previously led to a suspension later overturned by a judge, sold for almost $10,000 during an auction on Friday.
The entire amount raised from the sale of Marco Rocco’s bat, which he autographed, will benefit Haddonfield Little League, the team he plays for.
“Marco is passionate about Little League and is thrilled to contribute back to an organization he holds dear,” his father, Joe Rocco, stated in a message. “Little League has played a significant role in Marco’s life for quite some time.”
The auction hosted by Goldin Auctions received 68 bids with the final bid reaching $9,882. The identity of the winning bidder has not been disclosed.
Marco’s bat flip during the July 16 championship of the Little League sectional tournament led to his ejection, a one-game suspension, and subsequent legal proceedings.
This suspension would have prevented him from participating in the first match of the state tournament.
In response, Joe Rocco took the matter to court, where he successfully secured a temporary restraining order that allowed Marco to compete in the double-elimination tournament.
An additional tribute to the incident appeared in the form of a pin at the Little League World Series.
Notably, the bat flip also captured the attention of major league players, many of whom expressed support for the young athlete.
