New Jersey Experiences Series of Minor Earthquakes
Six small earthquakes struck a New Jersey county within a single day, alarming residents as their surroundings trembled.
On Monday, Morris County became the focus of the unusual seismic activity, registering quakes of magnitudes between 0.7 and 2.0. The Randolph area experienced five tremors, while Mendham recorded one, all within a span of approximately 17 hours, as reported by the US Geological Survey.
A local resident described the experience, stating, “There was just this loud boom.” They clarified that it wasn’t the sound of a tree falling, but rather a pronounced bang.
The sequence of events began with a 1.6 magnitude quake at 5:40 a.m., followed by another of 1.3 magnitude at 2:26 p.m., according to USGS data.
A 0.7 magnitude quake affected Mendham at 5:51 p.m., after which Randolph experienced consecutive tremors—recording a 1.2 magnitude quake at 8:19 p.m. and a stronger 2.0 tremor at 9 p.m.
Describing her experience, one homeowner remarked, “The couch basically jumped while I was watching TV.” She added, “Whenever the dog reacts, I always feel like something is happening.”
The seismic events concluded just before midnight, with the last quake measured at a magnitude of 1.1 at 11:25 p.m.
The series of earthquakes prompted Morris County’s Office of Emergency Management to handle numerous 911 calls from frightened residents, as stated by Director Jeff Paul.
He noted, “We do have that fault line that runs through Ramapo in Jersey, so it’s not completely unusual for this to happen.”
Fortunately, he confirmed, “It’s classified as minor in nature, and everyone is safe and sound with no reported damages.”
New Jersey houses the Ramapo Fault, which may be responsible for this seismic activity.
