Long Island Ducks Celebrate Milestone with Dramatic Home Win
The Long Island Ducks have reached a significant milestone after 25 years in the Atlantic League.
On Monday evening, the team achieved its 1,000th home victory, highlighted by a thrilling walk-off single from infielder Ed Johnson in the ninth inning, securing a 5-4 win against the Staten Island FerryHawks.
While fans in Islip erupted in celebration, it appears the players in the dugout were not immediately aware of the importance of the moment.
"Honestly, I didn’t find out it was the thousandth win until after the game ended," Ducks manager Lew Ford remarked.
Ford added with a chuckle, "It’s fitting that it ended with a walk-off."
The clubhouse, however, soon realized the significance of their achievement.
"They were thrilled about it," he noted. "We’re playing solid baseball, and this adds to our collection of home victories."
Currently leading their division, Ford mentioned that the team would leverage this momentum as they face crucial games in August.
He also credited the "best fans in the league" for playing a vital role in the Ducks’ accomplishments on the Island, where their overall home record now stands at 1,000-726, reflecting a .579 winning percentage.
"You can’t help but feed off their energy; it’s incredibly motivating," Ford emphasized. "The fans are engaged, watching every pitch, which keeps the players focused and elevates the overall excitement of the game."
Having a supportive home crowd that energizes the atmosphere can make a significant difference, Ford contended.
"When you’re on the road, it’s challenging," he acknowledged. "But the home fans create a comfortable environment, and we consistently draw large crowds, which can influence the outcome of many games."
