Andrew Garbarino Appointed Chair of House Homeland Security Committee
Long Island Republican Representative Andrew Garbarino will take on the role of chair for the influential House Homeland Security Committee.
Garbarino triumphed in a committee election held on Monday, surpassing fellow Congress members Michael Guest (R-Miss.), Carlos Giménez (R-Fla.), and Clay Higgins (R-La.) for the sought-after position, which oversees essential matters related to domestic security.
“As a lifelong New Yorker and a representative from a district deeply affected by 9/11, I recognize the significance of this responsibility. ‘Never forget’ is not merely a phrase,” Garbarino stated. “It embodies a commitment I have maintained throughout my life, and it will continue to guide my efforts.”
“The challenges before us are substantial. Addressing border security, tackling terrorism, bolstering cybersecurity, and strengthening our national defenses are vital to ensuring the safety of Americans,” he added.
Garbarino takes over from former Chairman Mark Green (R-Tenn.), who has vacated his seat in the House, further narrowing the GOP’s slight majority in the chamber.
Green announced his resignation following the enactment of President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill Act to embark on a new, undisclosed business venture in Guyana.
The former chairman made headlines in September when his wife alleged an extramarital affair and filed for divorce, claiming he had been involved with an Axios employee, although she later retracted her statements.
Garbarino, who has been part of the Homeland Security Committee since his election in 2020, previously drew attention for dozing off during an overnight congressional session concerning the House’s initial consideration of the Big Beautiful Bill.
His selection as chair was confirmed through a vote by the House Steering Committee, which assigns members to various committees. This nomination will now move to the House Republican Conference, which typically approves steering panel recommendations.
Since 2023, the Long Island representative has held the position of chairman of the Subcommittee on Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Protection. Additionally, he previously acted as an impeachment manager against former Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, who successfully resisted the effort by the GOP-led House to remove him.
