Los Angeles Mayor Signs Executive Order to Protect Immigrant Communities Amid Federal Raids
On Friday, Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass enacted an executive order aimed at enhancing support and protocols for immigrant populations, including the provision of cash assistance. This move comes in response to recent raids conducted by the Trump administration targeting undocumented residents.
The directive seeks to shield the city’s workforce and its residents from escalating federal immigration enforcement activities. It also mandates that federal agencies disclose details about the raids, including the identities of those detained, the reasons behind their detentions, and the financial impact on taxpayers—this will be pursued through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request.
"This executive directive is essential for our city to develop strategies for safeguarding itself against federal actions," Bass stated during a press conference. She noted the unpredictability of recent raids, emphasizing the community’s need for preparedness.
The order instructs city departments to formulate protocols and training programs that align with Los Angeles’ sanctuary city regulations.
In addition to protective measures, Bass announced efforts to provide financial assistance to those adversely affected by immigration enforcement. According to reports, cash cards containing several hundred dollars will soon be distributed by immigrant advocacy organizations.
Bass clarified that these funds will not originate from the city’s budget but rather from philanthropic contributions.
A White House spokesperson expressed skepticism about the initiative, questioning its validity and likening it to material from a satirical news outlet. They pointed out that current immigration enforcement has led to the apprehension of numerous violent offenders and addressed cases of child labor exploitation. The spokesperson criticized Bass for prioritizing illegal immigrants over American citizens.
"Voters are growing weary of these political theatrics," the representative commented. "They have chosen leadership focused on prioritizing Americans and not promoting measures from leaders like Bass and others."
Mayor Bass has been vocal against federal immigration operations aimed at apprehending undocumented individuals involved in criminal activities. Los Angeles is involved in litigation against the Trump administration over what it describes as "illegal" immigration raids.
Recently, immigration agents raided a cannabis farm in Ventura County, resulting in the discovery of ten undocumented minors, eight of whom were unaccompanied. U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Rodney Scott disclosed that the farm is now facing investigation for potential child labor law violations.
Earlier in the week, nearly 100 National Guard troops and immigration officials focused their efforts on the high-crime area of MacArthur Park in Los Angeles. This prompted Mayor Bass to visit the site and advocate for an end to these operations, a demand that was rejected by U.S. Border Patrol Chief Gregory Bovino, who asserted the commitment to ongoing enforcement activities in the area.
"I don’t report to Karen Bass," Bovino stated in response, indicating that such operations would be a regular occurrence moving forward.
