Fighter Jets Intercept Civilian Plane in Restricted Airspace Over Trump’s Bedminster Retreat
On Sunday, fighter jets were dispatched to intercept a civilian aircraft that had entered a restricted airspace over Donald Trump’s Bedminster retreat.
The event occurred around 12:50 p.m. ET, as reported by the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD), when the pilot inadvertently flew into a temporary flight restriction (TFR) zone.
NORAD’s aircraft escorted the civilian plane away from the area, utilizing flares to attract the pilot’s attention. This marked the second such interception on that day, as another aircraft had previously breached the TFR zone.
In total, there were five unauthorized incursions over the weekend. The second incident, which also involved the use of flares, likely garnered public visibility.
NORAD clarified that the flares are deployed with safety as a priority, ensuring no risk to the intercepted aircraft or individuals on the ground. Additionally, the flares extinguish quickly and completely, further eliminating any potential danger to those below.
Officials have urged private pilots to conduct thorough pre-flight checks.
“General aviation pilots should always verify all Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Notice to Airmen (NOTAMs) and Fly Informed before each flight, particularly concerning FAA NOTAMs 9839, 9840, 9841, and 9842 in the Bedminster area,” NORAD noted.
Pilot safety remains a critical focus for NORAD, which has previously highlighted the importance of adhering to TFR regulations.
“All pilots must stay informed about updates to restricted airspace, including reviewing both new and existing FAA NOTAMs that may affect their flight activities,” NORAD stated.
“The observance of FAA restricted airspace protocols is essential, regardless of the area, aircraft type, or crew,” they emphasized.
According to the president’s itinerary, Trump was at the Trump National Golf Club in Bedminster on Sunday and is anticipated to return to the White House later that evening.
