Illinois Governor Labels Trump a "Wannabe Dictator" Over National Guard Deployment Plans
Illinois Governor JB Pritzker strongly criticized President Trump in an impassioned address, denouncing the administration’s proposal to send National Guard troops to Chicago.
“This type of overreach is precisely what our nation’s founders cautioned against,” Pritzker declared during his speech in downtown Chicago on Monday.
Pritzker described the President’s actions as “unprecedented and unwarranted,” categorizing them as illegal, unconstitutional, and un-American. “Nobody in Chicago wants their neighborhood turned into a warzone by a wannabe dictator,” he asserted.
These remarks followed a report in the Washington Post, indicating that the White House was strategizing to potentially send thousands of National Guard members to Chicago as early as September to combat rising crime.
Reports indicate that these plans, which have been in preparation for several months, mirror previous deployments of armed National Guard units and active duty personnel to cities like Los Angeles in June and Washington, D.C., this month.
While the White House has not officially acknowledged these plans, President Trump confirmed during a press briefing earlier that he is considering troop deployment to Chicago.
In his remarks, Pritzker labeled Trump an “arrogant little man,” framing the proposed military presence as a form of political coercion.
“This isn’t about addressing crime; it’s a tactic for Trump to find any rationale to send military forces into a blue city within a blue state to intimidate his opponents,” Pritzker stated, alleging that the President aims to “militarize our cities and undermine elections.”
According to Pritzker, crime in Chicago has decreased in nearly every category, citing a yearly 30% drop in homicide rates. He further noted that cities and states led by Republicans exhibit higher crime rates than their Democratic counterparts.
“We have made no requests for federal intervention. None at all. We learned about Trump’s plans just like the rest of you—through a report in the Washington Post,” Pritzker explained.
