Hofstra Soccer Coach Richard Nuttall to Retire After Impressive 37-Year Tenure
Richard Nuttall, the esteemed head coach of Hofstra men’s soccer, has announced his retirement, concluding a remarkable 37-season journey with the Pride at the end of this fall.
Nuttall’s coaching legacy includes securing eight Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) championships, four of which he captured in a row from 2021 to 2024, a testament to his impactful leadership.
Reflecting on his beginnings, Nuttall recalled his time with the Glen Cove soccer club in the late 1980s. He initially heard about a part-time coaching opportunity at Hofstra, despite limited resources. Originating from Yorkshire, England, Nuttall stated, "I was playing for the Glen Cove soccer club…"
The coaching position at Hofstra was particularly appealing, as Glen Cove was home to a majority of Hofstra players, including Nuttall’s friend, Jim Kilmeade, who now leads the American Soccer Club at the university’s facilities.
"When the job opened, we encouraged Richie to apply,” Kilmeade shared. “Over the past three decades, he has built one of the premier programs in the nation.”
Although initially planning to stay at Hofstra for only two years before relocating to Australia, Nuttall found himself drawn to the university, the campus, and the surrounding community, which starkly contrasted with his rural upbringing.
“I cherish the relationships I’ve formed here,” said Nuttall, who will transition to an advisory role following the completion of the upcoming season. “From the custodians like Lefty and Nelson to the university’s president, I appreciate every one of them.”
In addition to his coaching accomplishments, Nuttall dedicated years to shaping youth soccer programs in Massapequa and Brentwood, emphasizing the significance of excellence both in athletic performance and personal development.
“We have won numerous matches and championship titles,” he remarked. “Yet, my greatest satisfaction comes from watching our players grow into outstanding individuals.”
He added, “I’m referring not only to financial success but also the personal connections. Our alumni include doctors, investors, bankers, educators, and coaches. Approximately 90 to 95 percent maintain contact, and I take pride in that achievement.”
