Harvard Seminar Features Stacey Abrams as a "Political Mastermind" Amid Election Losses
Harvard University has spotlighted Stacey Abrams, a two-time unsuccessful candidate for governor in Georgia, as a “political mastermind” in a new seminar that examines how race and gender have influenced American legal frameworks.
The seminar, titled “Race, Gender, and the Law Through the Archive,” is set for fall 2025 and notably misspells Abrams’ first name as “Stacy.” This course will investigate “the contributions of Black women and non-binary individuals in shaping politics, grassroots activism, the legal profession, and higher education during the Jim Crow era and beyond.”
Abrams, who lost gubernatorial elections in both 2018 and 2022 to Republican Brian Kemp, has never served in a federal capacity. Nonetheless, the university positions her as a pivotal figure among contemporary Black women in politics.
According to the course description, “From First Lady Michelle Obama to political mastermind Stacy Abrams [sic] to Vice President Kamala Harris, Black women have made significant contributions to 21st-century politics and grassroots activism.” The seminar will be led by Myisha Eatmon, a professor and historian noted for her radical views.
In a previous statement on social media, Eatmon referred to “white privilege as a drug,” a comment that garnered attention and controversy. She has since restricted her social media account.
Following her narrow defeat in 2018, Abrams asserted that her loss resulted from a rigged election system. However, she later moderated these comments amid criticism for promoting election denialism during her subsequent campaign in 2022.
The course, “Race, Gender, and the Law Through the Archive,” will analyze how race, gender, and sexuality have shaped political thought through the works of influential lawyers, philosophers, and activists from the civil rights movement.
In its four-credit breakdown, the course emphasizes that many scholars regard “law as a subjective concept.”
