Tragic Loss: Fiancée Mourns After US Tourist’s Fatal Shooting in Puerto Rico
The fiancée of a US tourist fatally shot in Puerto Rico while attending a Bad Bunny concert is expressing her grief through a series of poignant social media posts, just hours after sharing joyful photos from their outing.
Angy Nicole Arguello, the girlfriend of 25-year-old Kevin Mares, conveyed her sorrow in an Instagram story, writing “I love you, my angel” accompanied by a broken heart emoji, alongside an image of the couple together following Mares’ sudden death in La Perla on Sunday.
In another emotional post, she shared a smiling photo of Mares, stating, “My love, I love you. I miss you so much. Why, God, did you take him away from me?”
A GoFundMe page launched to assist with the costs of repatriating Mares’ body to New York City revealed that he intended to propose to Arguello this fall.
The couple, who both hail from Queens, had enjoyed six years together, as noted by the fundraiser.
Only hours before the tragic event, Arguello and Mares had shared carefree images featuring palm trees, resort pools, and toasting drinks with friends during their vacation in Puerto Rico.
Reports indicate that Mares was shot twice while at a popular nightlife venue in La Perla, a neighborhood on the fringe of Old San Juan. Authorities believe he was an innocent bystander caught in the crossfire of an argument between two individuals, one of whom brandished a firearm.
Mares sustained wounds to his abdomen and side, according to NBC 6 South Florida, and was swiftly taken to a hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
Additionally, two locals from La Perla were also shot, and they are currently hospitalized.
Mares had traveled to Puerto Rico with Arguello and a friend to attend one of the many concerts by the popular local artist, which has attracted thousands of tourists to the Caribbean island and US territory.
Family and friends described Mares as “a deeply loved son, devoted friend, and an inspiration to all who knew him,” according to the GoFundMe page set up to facilitate his return home.
“His kind heart, adventurous nature, and steadfast dedication to family made him a cornerstone of support for his loved ones,” the page noted, adding that Mares was planning to propose to Arguello in the fall.
“Family was the cornerstone of everything he did, and his unexpected passing has created a void that cannot be filled,” his loved ones expressed on the fundraising site.
As of now, the shooter has not been apprehended, according to local police.
“We have very little information,” stated Detective Sgt. Arnaldo Ruiz from San Juan.
La Perla has a long-standing reputation for crime and violence, which continues to affect the area.
