Senator Kennedy Warns of ‘Radioactive Shrimp’ Dangers
A Republican senator made an unusual appeal on the Senate floor last week, expressing concerns about imaginary threats posed by radioactive shrimp, including unsettling assertions that consuming the seafood could cause humans to develop extra limbs or resemble extraterrestrial beings.
Senator John Kennedy of Louisiana, 73, addressed his peers on Thursday, displaying an enlarged image of the alien-like tapeworm from the film "Alien."
Kennedy’s comments were prompted by the recall of radioactive shrimp from various grocery stores in late August. While these shrimp were indeed hazardous due to the presence of the radioactive isotope cesium-137, the risk primarily involved an elevated cancer threat, according to the Food and Drug Administration.
During his address, Kennedy referenced fictional symptoms as one of his aides attempted to maintain a serious demeanor nearby.
"It’s lethal. Even if it doesn’t transform you into an alien, eating this will definitely result in growing an extra ear—that’s already concerning,” Kennedy stated.
His caution focused on products cultivated in countries with different safety regulations than those in the U.S. He asserted, without offering evidence, that some foreign shrimp are injected with antibiotics, claiming that prolonged consumption leads to antibiotic resistance.
Louisiana, the state Kennedy represents, ranks among the largest shrimp producers in the nation, alongside Texas.
“I stand by Louisiana shrimp, freshly caught from the Gulf, not radioactive varieties. Nevertheless, I acknowledge that some retailers opt for imported shrimp due to lower costs. Now we understand why: the stuff is radioactive,” he remarked.
Kennedy later shared this peculiar presentation on his social media account, which has since attracted 1.5 million views. Some commentators accused the senator of “fear-mongering” to deflect attention from significant issues, while others reluctantly supported prioritizing domestically harvested seafood.
Kennedy, who has been in office since 2017, is known for his peculiar remarks on various national matters.
Following the fatal shooting at the NFL headquarters in New York in July, he stated that the country requires “idiot control” rather than stricter gun regulations. He admitted that he did not know the precise methods to implement such control.
When discussing protests against ICE in Los Angeles, he suggested that Democrats upset with President Trump’s actions should consider using a Zoloft, a common antidepressant and anxiety medication.
