Speeding Phantom Busted in Czech Republic After Years of Dodging Police
Czech authorities have apprehended an elusive speedster who has been illegally racing a Formula 1-style Ferrari on highways for nearly six years.
Known as the “Phantom Ferrari driver,” the suspect was tracked to a residence in Bulk, approximately 37 miles from Prague, where law enforcement detained a 51-year-old man while he was operating the vehicle, as reported by Czech police in a social media update.
The distinct car, driven by an individual in full racing attire, has been spotted numerous times since 2019, often evading capture by traffic authorities.
Recent footage captured this past Sunday showcased the car navigating the D4 motorway and making a stop at a gas station, according to reports.
The video evidence also depicted a tense exchange between the driver and the police officers, with the driver asserting that they were trespassing on private property.
Following the incident, the man’s son criticized the police response, which involved multiple squad cars and a helicopter, deeming it excessive for a "supposed traffic violation."
The arrested individual, whose identity remains undisclosed, eventually complied with police requests to accompany them for questioning, all while still dressed in his racing gear.
During the interrogation, he reportedly refrained from commenting on the situation. Authorities have indicated that the case will proceed to administrative review.
Police initially identified this reckless driver back in 2019 when images of his escapades circulated online. However, upon discovery of the vehicle, he denied any involvement in driving it on highways.
The driver had remained anonymous previously due to the helmet obscuring his face.
It remains unclear whether the individual apprehended recently is the same person linked to the 2019 incidents.
Authorities have stated that he may face a fine of several thousand crowns, as well as a suspension of his driving privileges.
While commonly called a Ferrari Formula 1 car, the vehicle is technically categorized as a Dallara GP2/08, an Italian race car that serves as a stepping stone to Formula One, according to reports.
