Assault on Aid Workers in Gaza Leaves Two Americans Injured
The Gaza Humanitarian Foundation (GHF) reported on Saturday that two American aid workers sustained injuries not considered life-threatening during a deliberate attack at a food distribution event in Gaza.
The U.S.- and Israeli-supported GHF confirmed in a statement that the injured workers are currently under medical care and their condition is stable.
According to initial reports, the assault involved two attackers who launched grenades at the Americans as the food distribution, which had successfully provided meals to thousands of Gazans, was concluding.
The GHF, which also employs private U.S. military contractors for site security, has not identified the assailants responsible for the attack. The Israeli military has not issued a statement in response to inquiries from Reuters.
Separately, Gazan authorities announced that dozens of Palestinians were killed by Israeli military actions over the last 24 hours, with some fatalities occurring near aid distribution locations.
On Thursday, the Hamas-controlled interior ministry cautioned Gaza residents against aiding the GHF, claiming that incidents near food distribution sites posed risks to those seeking assistance.
The GHF began its food package initiatives in Gaza at the end of May, circumventing traditional aid mechanisms like those of the United Nations, which has described the organization as lacking impartiality.
The foundation claims to have provided over 52 million meals to Palestinians in five weeks, in contrast to other humanitarian efforts that reportedly saw “nearly all their aid looted.”
Since Israel lifted an 11-week blockade on aid to Gaza on May 19, the U.N. has reported over 400 Palestinian deaths while individuals were attempting to access aid. A senior U.N. representative noted that a significant portion of these victims were seeking aid from the GHF.
Video evidence shared by the GHF depicted at least one aid site overwhelmed by demand, leading many Palestinians to characterize the environment as chaotic.
Gaza’s health ministry has reported that at least 70 individuals were killed by Israeli military actions in the past 24 hours, including 23 near food distribution centers. However, the ministry did not provide specific details on the circumstances of these deaths.
According to the Gaza health ministry, the ongoing conflict has resulted in over 57,000 Palestinian fatalities since Israel commenced military operations against Hamas following the group’s surprise attack on October 7, 2023, which resulted in approximately 1,200 Israeli deaths and the abduction of 251 hostages. Currently, 50 hostages remain in Gaza, with 20 believed to be alive.
