North Carolina Player Wins $2 Million Powerball Prize, Eyes New Home
A Powerball player from North Carolina narrowly missed the $1.2 billion jackpot but emerged with a substantial $2 million win, prompting plans for a new residence.
Daryl Steinhoff has been identified as the fortunate resident of Clayton, NC, who matched all five white balls during the drawing on September 1, missing only the red Powerball number needed for the grand prize.
Utilizing “family numbers,” Steinhoff matched every white ball and opted for the Power Play option, which doubled his $1 million prize to $2 million, as confirmed by the lottery officials.
The winning numbers were 8, 23, 25, 40, 53, with the red Powerball being 5.
Steinhoff discovered his win the following morning when he received a notification confirming he had a prize.
“The next day, I got an email saying I won something,” Steinhoff recounted to the state lottery. “I felt ecstatic and in disbelief. I immediately called my daughter and girlfriend.”
On Thursday, he collected his winnings at the North Carolina Lottery headquarters in Raleigh.
The 68-year-old proudly displayed a giant check for $2 million, from which he received approximately $1.44 million after tax deductions.
Steinhoff wasn’t alone in his successful drawing, as another anonymous winner in Montana matched all five white balls and also added the Power Play, securing a $2 million prize.
This ticket was sold at a Rosauers Supermarket located in Missoula, MT. The unnamed winner made their claim on September 5, according to the state lottery.
“Lesson of the day: Trust your instincts, even if others say it’s a waste of time!” remarked Montana lottery officials in their announcement.
The Powerball jackpot continued its impressive ascent, culminating in two jackpot winners from Missouri and Texas who shared the nearly $1.79 billion prize on Saturday night.
This marked a record-setting 42 drawing streak without a jackpot winner, spanning from May 31 to September 6.
The recent jackpot winners face a choice between an annuitized payout of $895 million over 29 years or an upfront lump sum of $410.3 million, prior to taxes.
Additionally, players from Kansas and Texas matched all five white balls with the Power Play, securing the same $2 million prize as Steinhoff.
Fifteen other participants successfully won $1 million each by matching the five white balls alone.
