Title: Illegal Immigrant Accused in Shooting of Customs Officer Faces Justice in Manhattan Court
An undocumented immigrant, linked to the shooting of an off-duty Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer, confronted the agent’s outraged colleagues during a packed federal court session in Manhattan on Friday.
Christhian Aybar-Berroa, 22, arrived at the courthouse in ripped jeans and a $200 T-shirt, where he was arraigned on a charge of being an accessory after the fact. The court ordered his detention until at least a preliminary hearing scheduled for August 8.
Approximately thirty CBP officers gathered, waiting for hours as frustrations mounted. One officer was overheard expressing displeasure at the delay, noting they had been present since 7 a.m. for a hearing that did not commence until 2:30 p.m.
Aybar-Berroa, with disheveled hair and a blank stare, wore a T-shirt featuring a skeleton playing baseball with the inscription “Godspeed.” He is alleged to have been the getaway driver during a botched robbery attempt that occurred on July 19 in Fort Washington Park.
Prosecutors allege that his accomplice, 21-year-old Miguel Francisco Mora Nunez, also from the Dominican Republic, shot the off-duty CBP officer during the incident. The officer, currently hospitalized due to gunshot wounds to his face and arm, was able to return fire, injuring Mora Nunez twice in the process.
Following the shooting, Mora Nunez reportedly returned to Aybar-Berroa, who drove him to a hospital and then abandoned him at the entrance.
As of now, Mora Nunez has not yet been arraigned in connection with the case.
