Wing Part Falls from Delta Flight, Lands in North Carolina Driveway
A Delta Air Lines flight made a secure landing early Wednesday morning after a section of its wing flap detached mid-air and fell onto a residential driveway in North Carolina.
The incident occurred at approximately 1:15 a.m. local time on July 2, involving a Boeing 737-900ER on a route from Atlanta to Raleigh-Durham, carrying six crew members and 109 passengers. Upon landing, it was discovered that a piece of the left wing’s trailing edge flap was missing. A Delta representative stated, “Delta is fully committed to supporting recovery efforts and will fully cooperate with investigations, as safety remains our top priority.”
The part broke away from Flight 3247 before it reached its destination. The airline noted that the flight experienced delays due to thunderstorms, departing Atlanta ten minutes behind schedule around 11:06 p.m. the previous evening.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has confirmed it is investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Local authorities communicated to WRAL that there were no injuries or significant property damage associated with the event.
A witness, Susan Reed, remarked on the unusual nature of the occurrence given the neighborhood’s density, saying, “It’s surprising considering how busy the area is. We were fortunate this didn’t result in a more serious situation.”
Recovery efforts for the wing flap have commenced, as Delta continues to engage with federal regulators to ensure all safety protocols are maintained.
