Cuomo Suggests Florida Move If He Loses NYC Mayoral Race
Former Governor Andrew Cuomo announced on Saturday that he would relocate to Florida if he loses the New York City mayoral election to socialist candidate Zohran Mamdani.
"It’s all or nothing. We either win, or even I will pack up for Florida. God forbid!" Cuomo stated during a gathering with business executives at a breakfast event in the Hamptons, hosted by supermarket entrepreneur John Catsimatidis.
The remark elicited laughter from the audience, and Cuomo’s campaign later clarified that it was meant as a joke.
"That was quite a line," remarked one guest. "It certainly captured everyone’s attention."
Cuomo, who lost the Democratic primary to Mamdani last month and is now running independently in the upcoming November general election, repeatedly referred to the 33-year-old socialist as "kid" throughout his comments at the popular venue, 75 Main.
He criticized Mamdani’s proposals for freezing rents on stabilized apartments, labeling such plans a "death sentence" for the housing market, as they could prompt landlords to invest less in property maintenance.
Mamdani’s campaign did not issue a response.
Cuomo’s criticism extended to Mayor Eric Adams, another Democrat vying for re-election as an independent. He claimed that New York City has lacked a "competent mayor" since Michael Bloomberg left office in 2013, asserting that Adams has been distracted for much of his mayoralty due to previous federal corruption investigations and various controversies.
"The city feels out of control," Cuomo commented.
Among the attendees were prominent figures in business and politics, including real estate magnate Bruce Mosler, former U.S. Ambassador to Greece George Tsunis, state Assemblywoman Rebecca Seawright, Democratic fundraiser Dennis Miehl, and longtime Cuomo aide Melissa DeRosa.
Cuomo’s spokesperson, Rich Azzopardi, affirmed that the governor’s comments about moving to Florida were in jest and that the audience understood the humor.
"Governor Cuomo would never abandon New York," Azzopardi emphasized. "However, the quip highlighted the critical nature of this election and the dangers of electing an inexperienced, divisive 33-year-old socialist whose campaign focuses on unrealistic slogans."
Adams, who expressed earlier this week his commitment to New York, said, "If Cuomo is serious about moving to Florida, he should just go ahead—he’s already spent three weekends in the Hamptons."
