U.S. Coast Guard Captures $20 Million in Illicit Drugs
The U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) has successfully seized more than $20 million worth of cocaine and marijuana from suspected narcotics traffickers.
On Wednesday, approximately 2,220 pounds of cocaine and 3,320 pounds of marijuana were delivered to Coast Guard Base Miami Beach, according to a recent press release from the USCG.
“Preventing harmful and illegal drugs from infiltrating our shores and our communities requires a collaborative effort,” stated Cmdr. Brian Gismervik, the commanding officer of the Coast Guard Cutter Northland.
“In the ever-changing maritime context, it is essential that we work together with our Department of Defense, Department of Homeland Security, and international allies to dismantle transnational criminal networks,” he added.
The substantial haul was attributed to four separate operations in the Caribbean Sea, with participation from ships of the Royal Canadian Navy, the Royal Netherlands Navy, and the U.S. Navy, the USCG confirmed.
In related news, US Customs and Border Protection officers have also recently confiscated $875,000 in marijuana disguised as a shipment of men’s overalls.
The Coast Guard shared footage of the drugs being offloaded from their black plastic wrappings, alongside images of a Helicopter Interdiction Tactical Squadron team from the Royal Netherlands Navy ship Friesland, which intercepted a suspected drug smuggling vessel off the coast of Venezuela on June 15.
The Coast Guard has yet to disclose any details regarding the individuals implicated in these operations.
