Shocking Developments in the Case of 7-Month-Old Emmanuel Haro’s Murder
California authorities investigating the tragic death of 7-month-old Emmanuel Haro provided unsettling updates on Tuesday as his parents faced court for murder allegations.
Prosecutors suspect that Haro may have died as many as nine days before his mother, Rebecca, reported him missing, claiming he was taken from outside a sporting goods store in Yucaipa, California. This was revealed in recently unsealed court documents.
The investigation has established a vague timeline regarding the infant’s demise, indicating that he might have been killed sometime between August 5 and August 14, the day of the alleged kidnapping.
Rebecca Haro, 41, claimed she was assaulted by an unknown man while changing her son’s diaper in the family vehicle parked at Big 5 Sporting Goods.
Upon being informed of the disappearance, law enforcement initiated a search for Emmanuel. However, inconsistencies in the accounts given by Rebecca and her husband, Jake, raised suspicions about a potential kidnapping.
The couple later ceased cooperation with authorities and engaged legal counsel, shortly before they were identified as key suspects in the murder case.
"Evidence suggests that no kidnapping took place in Yucaipa. It is believed that Emmanuel has passed away, and efforts to locate his remains are ongoing," stated the San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department on Friday.
As part of the investigation, police confiscated Jake Haro’s vehicle on August 19.
Both parents were apprehended on August 22 during a raid on their home in Cabazon, facing charges of murder with malice and making false reports regarding the incident.
Interestingly, Rebecca was seen at the same store days prior to her report, allegedly inquiring if security cameras were present, as her car had been burglarized.
Two days following their arrest, Jake was spotted in an open field wearing an orange prison jumpsuit while authorities searched for Emmanuel’s remains on land near a highway in Moreno Valley.
Despite the ongoing search, the infant has yet to be found.
Rebecca has consistently asserted her innocence, claiming her husband would never harm a child and expressing her desire to search for Emmanuel. "I want to be out looking for my baby. … I will not give up. I will not give up on my baby," she stated to Southern California News Group.
The Haros, who also have a two-year-old daughter, appeared in Riverside County court on Tuesday without legal representation.
They were assigned a public defender after their previous attorney, Vincent Hughes, failed to attend the hearing.
Further arraignments are expected on September 4, when it is anticipated that new attorneys will be appointed.
No pleas have been entered in the case thus far.
If convicted of murder with malice, the couple could face sentences ranging from life imprisonment without parole to the death penalty.
Jake Haro has a prior criminal record, having served a six-month sentence for child cruelty in 2018 and is currently on probation.
In a related note, Rebecca Haro’s brother, James Beushausen, is serving a lengthy prison term for the murder of his girlfriend in 2017, for which he falsely attempted to stage the incident as a suicide.
