Cuomo to Receive Crucial Union Backing in NYC Mayoral Election
Former Governor Andrew Cuomo is set to secure a vital endorsement on Saturday from Local 3 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW), marking his first union support for the upcoming general election in New York City’s mayoral contest.
Cuomo is anticipated to reveal the endorsement from the influential union, which boasts a membership of 29,000, during the annual Labor Day Parade held in Manhattan.
Previously, the ex-governor had garnered the union’s support in the Democratic primary but faced an unexpected loss to socialist Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani from Queens.
A Cuomo insider expressed optimism about obtaining further endorsements from other unions for the general election, asserting, “While many unions quickly distanced themselves due to political pressures, there are still many that are unwilling to align with socialism.”
Cuomo emphasized his appreciation for the IBEW Local 3 endorsement, stating, “This endorsement means a great deal to me as we have collaborated for decades. IBEW Local 3 Business Manager Christopher Erikson praised Cuomo, asserting that “robust trade unions are key to achieving middle-class status and economic stability for workers. Andrew Cuomo has been a steadfast ally of unions for many years.”
Erikson further declared that “Andrew is the optimal candidate to guarantee stability in NYC and elevate standards for all workers,” while criticizing Mamdani’s socialist affiliations, suggesting that “neither Democratic Socialism nor socialism is the resolution for New York City or America.”
