Investigation Launched Into Alabama Priest Over Alleged Relationship with Minor
A Catholic priest is currently facing scrutiny following claims that he initiated a relationship with a 17-year-old stripper and allegedly paid her significant sums to remain silent about their involvement.
Robert Sullivan, 61, has taken a leave of absence from his position as pastor at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Homewood, Alabama, after Heather Jones, now 33, accused him of starting the relationship in 2009 when she was a minor.
In correspondence with the Diocese of Birmingham, which was also shared with The Guardian, Jones recounted that she first encountered Sullivan while she was performing at a strip club he often visited.
During their interactions, she alleged that he offered her $273,000 to sign a non-disclosure agreement, which stipulated that she would receive continuous financial support in exchange for maintaining a private relationship that included sexual acts. Jones indicated that his persistent proposals played a significant role in her eventual agreement.
Raised in foster care amid her mother’s severe neglect, Jones expressed in her letter that her vulnerable state influenced her decision to accept his terms.
Shortly thereafter, she claimed to have received two wire transfers totaling $273,000 attributed to an attorney’s office.
Sullivan, who initially presented himself as a physician, purportedly took Jones on outings and offered experiences in several cities across Alabama throughout their years-long relationship.
She asserted that he purchased a phone for her and funded her rehabilitation as she grappled with addiction and depression.
According to Jones, from July 18, 2024, to March of this year, nearly $120,000 was transferred to her via a Venmo account linked to her name.
Feeling compelled to disclose these allegations, Jones emphasized the potential risks to others, particularly as Sullivan works closely with families and children within his parish.
“I believe others may be susceptible to similar forms of manipulation and exploitation,” she stated.
Sullivan, who has served as a priest for over 32 years and previously held the position of president at John Carroll High School for six years, announced on August 2 his decision to take personal leave from his pastoral duties.
In a letter to the diocese, Bishop Steven Raica addressed the allegations, explaining that the evidence gathered was insufficient to pursue a criminal investigation into Sullivan.
“The Alabama Department of Human Resources determined that the claims did not warrant an investigation, prompting the diocese to initiate its internal inquiry in accordance with Church regulations and our diocesan policies,” Raica wrote.
He added that the diocese’s Victim Assistance Coordinator has been in ongoing communication with Jones to offer necessary support.
The bishop stated that the allegations have also been forwarded to the Vatican for further consideration.
