Title: Florida Authorities Capture Illegal Immigrant Linked to High-End Jewelry Thefts
An undocumented migrant sought in several states for luxury jewelry thefts was apprehended in Florida on Monday when officials noticed a hefty $40,000 Rolex on the wrist of his 10-year-old son.
Marcu Rostas, 33, described as a “traveling gypsy,” was detained just a day after allegedly robbing a jewelry establishment in Stuart, Florida, according to the Martin County Sheriff’s Office.
When officers stopped the unaware Romanian national, he was accompanied by his wife and two small children, both adorned with stolen luxury items.
Rostas’ son was seen wearing an oversized Rolex worth over $40,000, while his daughter had a valuable necklace, as reported by the sheriff’s office.
Authorities soon discovered a trove of additional stolen jewelry in the family’s vehicle, including a $40,000 diamond ring, gold chains, gold coins, $30,000 in cash, and other expensive watches. The sheriff estimated that the total value of the items in the car reached approximately $400,000.
The stolen valuables were cleverly concealed within one of the children’s stuffed animals, officials indicated.
"Rostas roamed the country, targeting individuals, but on Sunday, his crime spree encountered a setback, aptly described as the #WrongExit," the sheriff’s office commented on Facebook.
This itinerant thief is also wanted in various other states for similar crimes.
Investigators uncovered several counterfeit identifications during their investigation, confirming that Rostas entered the country illegally from Romania.
Authorities stated that he is part of an extensive network of traveling "distraction thieves," often referred to as gypsies.
“Rostas is affiliated with a broader group of traveling thieves who move across the United States, exploiting unsuspecting targets through deceptive tactics to steal significant amounts of cash or valuables,” the sheriff’s office detailed on Facebook.
Their methods frequently involve women and children who distract victims while the men commit thefts, officials explained.
“While one accomplice engages the victim, another discreetly pilfers jewelry, cash, or other valuables in mere seconds. They target jewelry stores, retail outlets, and sometimes private residences,” the sheriff’s office added.
As of now, Rostas has not faced charges. Immigration officials arrived at the scene of his arrest, and an ICE detainer was issued.
